- Taenia solium (pork; cysticercosis from eggs) â 7-13 branches
- Diphyllobothrium (freshwater fish) â B12 deficiency + megaloblastic anemia
- Hymenolepis nana (person-to-person) â pediatric / crowded
- Treatment: praziquantel single dose (or niclosamide)
Cysticercosis (T. solium Larva)
- Egg ingestion (not pork â fecal contamination, autoinfection)
- Tissue cysts in brain, muscle, eye, subcutaneous
- Neurocysticercosis = #1 parasitic CNS disease worldwide
- Forms: active + transitional + calcified + extraparenchymal
- MRI for diagnosis; EITB serology most specific
- Treatment: albendazole 15 mg/kg/d à 10-15 d + dexamethasone + anticonvulsants
- praziquantel for heavy burden
- Calcified only: anticonvulsants only
Echinococcosis
- E. granulosus â CE (Cystic Echinococcosis) â dog/sheep cycle; liver 70%; daughter cysts in mother
- E. multilocularis â AE (Alveolar Echinococcosis) â fox/dog; infiltrative tumor-like
- CE Treatment: albendazole + PAIR (accessible cysts) + surgery + observation (inactive)
- AE Treatment: surgical R0 resection + albendazole lifelong
- Rupture of CE = anaphylaxis + dissemination
General
- Praziquantel = adult tapeworms; Albendazole = tissue larvae
- Sanitation + cooking + dog deworming = prevention
- éå ± mandatory most jurisdictions
- ç§é«åž« hint: adult-onset seizures + endemic origin â MRI + NCC workup
